So, I have an 1985 Porsche 944. It was never equipped with a license plate light. I got pulled over for not having one. What are my options here? Install one somehow? Or is my car old enough that I don’t need one?

I am just speculating here, but if the vehicle was never equipped from the factory with a license plate light, one would think you would be exempt. I’m 99% sure the same holds true for vehicles that were never equipped with seatbelts.

It has them, they probably just don’t work. Crouch down and look above the plate, you’ll see two plastic lenses screwed in to the tail panel. 944s like to collect water around the hatch latch and seals, they lamp housings may be damaged, or it may just have bad bulbs.

What state? While laws are generally the sameish across the country, the details are often different.

I’d just go ahead and install one less you’re going to keep getting pulled over. I’m sure there’s a bracket out there that mounts to the plate and just run the wires to your driving lights. easy fix

He might have a 944 that has the “Porsche” fill-in panel and the plate on the bumper. All the pictures of that setup I was seeing, there didn’t appear to be a license plate light... which is unbelievably wack.

Put on a license plate light. It’s cheap enough to avoid being harassed by the po-po.

I’m going to second RamblinRover’s post and assume that your car has one of those aftermarket reflector panels between the taillights. Normally (stock from the factory) they have the plate there. Here are the lights are as seen from inside the hatch .

That is possible, haven’t seen one of those in awhile so didn’t even think of it. PET doesn’t even show that panel for US cars, I’m sure it wasn’t Federalized that way.

Got a solution for you.

There are LED lights designed as plate attachment screws. They’re sometimes billed as motorcycle plate lights. Here’s a pic:

I’ve seen them just about everywhere that carries car accessories and supplies. (Pep Boys, Auto Zone etc)

You’ll have to decide what you want to run the power to - maybe the marker lights, so the plate lights only turn on when you’ve turned other lights on.

Also: LED bulbs, in general? AWESOME.

Growing up in Europe when that car was new, I saw so many with that panel, I’d have a hard time believe it wasn’t a factory item.

In any case. If you have that, then I doubt your car ever came with a rear light for the license plate. What will you do?
